Title: Visualized Decision Making:
Applying Information Visualization to Decision Making for the Public
Speaker: Prof. Ji Soo Yi (School of Industrial Engineering, Purdue University)
Place: KAIST GSCT N25 #3229
Time: 2013.01.03. 10:30-11:30

Abstract:
All of us constantly make decisions in various levels.  Unfortunately, the general public often have difficulties in their decisions because of the sheer quantity of information available, the type of information (e.g., text vs. multimedia), and complex relations within the information.  To alleviate these problems, researchers in human-computer interaction and its subdomain, information visualization, have developed many useful tools. This talk will introduce several recent visualization techniques developed in the HIVE Lab, such as Food for the Heart, SimulSort, and Sentiment Marks, and associated evaluation studies. This talk will also introduce theoretical and methodological development to enhance the understanding of detailed cognitive processes during decision making using crowdsourcing and eye-tracking methods.

Short Bio:
Ji Soo Yi (yij@purdue.edu) is an assistant professor specializing in human factors in the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University. He founded the HIVE Lab (https://engineering.purdue.edu/HIVELab/) in March 2009. He received a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Seoul National University in 1998. After graduation, he worked in industry for five years as a consultant and as an embedded software engineer in Seoul and Boston, where he became interested in human-computer interaction (HCI) research. He received his Ph.D. degree from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in August 2008. His research topics include human-computer interaction, information visualization, and decision science.
