(Augmented Reality Interface in Wearable Computing Age)
Speaker : Dr. Gun Lee (HITLab NZ, University of Canterbury)
Place : KAIST GSCT N25 #3235
Time : 2014.01.28. 15:00-17:00

Abstract :

Since the Google Glass was introduced to the public, wearable computing is gaining more interest as a future computing platform. As computers and smart devices become small enough to wear, the temporal and spatial barrier to access digital information from user’s everyday life is getting smaller, and the physical and virtual worlds become more integrated. However, as the devices get smaller and wearable, the interaction between the human user and the computing device become more challenging. Among various human-computer interface technologies, Augmented Reality (AR) technology is expected to have an important role for wearable computers, as it shares the concept of integrating virtual information into the real physical world. In this talk, we will look into human-computer interaction aspects of Google Glass, review AR researches using the device, and discuss on future research direction.

Short Bio :

Dr. Gun Lee has a specialty in Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Three-dimensional (3D) User interfaces. As a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ, University of Canterbury), he is working on investigating interaction and visualization methods for AR and immersive 3D environments. Since joining the HIT Lab NZ, he has been leading the CityViewAR project, developing a mobile AR software framework and several applications showing geo-spatial information through AR visualization. Recently, he worked on applying the software framework to run on Google Glass.

Before joining the HIT Lab NZ, Dr. Lee had been working at Electronics and Telecommunications Institute (ETRI, Korea) as a researcher where he developed VR and AR systems for industrial applications, including Multi-projection based Hemispherical Display for reviewing car interior design, Virtual training systems for paint spraying and welding, Mixed reality based spatial planning system, and interactive visualization software for multi-view autostereosopic 3D displays.

Dr. Lee received BS degree in Computer Science from Kyungpook National University (Korea), and completed his Masters and Ph D in Computer Science and Engineering at POSTECH (Korea), investigating immersive authoring method for creating VR and AR contents using 3D user interfaces.
