UVR Lab. was formed in Feb. 2001 at GIST to study and develop “Virtual Reality in Smart computing environments” that process multimodal input, perceive user’s intention and emotion, and respond to user’s request through Augmented Reality. Since 2012, UVR Lab moved to KAIST GSCT and restarted with a theme of “FUN in Ubiquitous VR.”

Inhwa Yeom, Woontack Woo. “Digital Twin as A Mixed Reality Platform for Art Exhibition Curation”, 2021 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces Abstracts and Workshops (VRW), 2021.

This paper proposes a virtual museum curation system for digital twin museums, which aims to replicate and enhance the professional capability of arts curators. Despite the rising presence and circulation of virtual museums in varying digital formats, the engagement of arts curators have been invisible, or nearly disabled on such museums, with current solutions focus on either 3D authoring or data management. Instead of this categorization, we re-define user needs for virtual curation system with 13 arts professionals, in particular consideration of their actual work scope and flow. Constructed with a digital twin database, we propose a virtual curation system that integrate functionalities aided with 3D authoring techniques for creating multiple versions of exhibitions in spatial and semantic units. With 10 other arts and museum curators, we validate our 3D interfaces and interactions in comparison with 3 other state-of-the-art systems. Our results demonstrate that the system are usable, and support multiple professional capabilities and needs of curators. Deriving from the evaluation, we conclude with a design guideline for future studies that also aim to extend arts curator’s creativity and professional outreach beyond time and space.
