GSCT UVR LAB.
UVR Lab. was formed in Feb. 2001 at GIST to study and develop “Virtual Reality in Smart computing environments” that process multimodal input, perceive user’s intention and emotion, and respond to user’s request through Augmented Reality. Since 2012, UVR Lab moved to KAIST GSCT and restarted with a theme of “FUN in Ubiquitous VR.”

Augmented Reality is a technology that combines virtual and real worlds in real time to help users to complete their work or to provide users with new experiences. Various AR applications have been developed on smart mobile devices. Contents of these AR applications are generally provided by application developers. Recently the paradigm has shifted from developer-crated contents to user-created contents so the need for developing authoring systems for general users has emerged. In this talk, I will introduce AR authoring systems with varying abstraction levels.

This talk introduces the developing process for mobile augmented reality (AR) applications

(including both indoor and outdoor cases) which use a visual SLAM technology. For each AR application, the difficulties and approaches in the content planning and practical development are described. Also, it is explained how to connect interactive devices and how to manage the data of an AR application. At the end of this talk, the future of AR will be shortly discussed.

MR(mixed reality) encompassing both AR(augmented reality) and VR(virtual reality) is emerging fast as a practical way of enriching our everyday lives as well as realizing the digital transformation. Critical enabling technology of MR has been camera tracking for long time. Owing to the rapid progress in computer vision technology, camera tracking has found some affordable solutions in many ordinary situations. However, there is much room for further exploration in tracking at adverse environments or of deformable objects. Object recognition is expected to play a key role for large-scale intelligent MR services. Human-computer interaction is also indispensable for deploying enjoyable MR applications. Moreover, seamless compositing of real and virtual worlds is very important as presence and immersion are essential in MR. In this presentation, important technical issues in these core technologies are illuminated and the frontiers of AR technologies are explored on the basis of recent technical papers and personal research experience.
